What is the BKR register and how does it affect your credit in the Netherlands?

If you plan to take a loan, finance a car, or apply for a mortgage in the Netherlands, you will likely hear about BKR registration.

The Bureau Krediet Registratie (BKR) is the national credit register used by banks and lenders to check a person’s financial commitments before approving new credit.

Understanding how BKR works is important because it can directly affect your ability to borrow money in the Netherlands.

What is BKR?

BKR collects information about loans and credit agreements held by consumers in the Netherlands. When you take certain types of credit, the lender usually reports the agreement to BKR.

This may include:

  • personal loans
  • credit cards with a spending limit
  • overdrafts
  • private car leasing
  • installment purchases such as phones bought on contract

The system helps lenders understand what financial obligations a person already has.

Is BKR history required to buy a house in the Netherlands?

A common concern for people moving to the Netherlands is whether they need a Dutch credit history before applying for a mortgage.

The good news is that a credit history with the Dutch register — Bureau Krediet Registratie (BKR) — is not required to buy a home in the Netherlands.

Many internationals arrive in the country without any credit record in the Dutch system, and this does not automatically prevent them from getting a mortgage.

Instead, lenders mainly look at factors such as:

  • your income
  • your employment contract
  • your financial commitments
  • your overall financial situation

However, if you already have loans or financing registered in BKR, banks will include them when calculating how much you can borrow.

Not sure where you stand with the BKR?

If you want to check whether you are registered in the database of Bureau Krediet Registratie (BKR), you can access your credit report using your DigiD.
